Climate Rebels: Connecting English Learning with Environmental Action

Climate Rebels: English learning and environmental action, an EcoLingua classroom activity led by Giuseppe Capalbo in May 2025.

In May 2025, Giuseppe Capalbo organised an English-language classroom activity that invited students to explore the people behind environmental action. Four classes of 13-year-old lower-secondary students took part, using Climate Rebels by Ben Lerwill in its Penguin Readers edition as their starting point.

Each student selected an environmental campaigner from the book and prepared a PowerPoint presentation to introduce that person and discuss their environmental engagement with classmates. The activity connected reading in English with research, digital presentation, and classroom communication.

By moving from a shared reading task to individual presentations, students had an opportunity to consider both personal and collective responsibility towards the environment. The accompanying student work illustrates how environmental themes can provide a meaningful focus for language use.

Capalbo reports that the outcomes of this classroom activity informed Work Package 2 of EcoLingua, contributing to the design and refinement of teaching materials and tasks for A1/A2 learners.
