๐Ÿ“… LESSON 1 (1 week prior) Stand-Up/Sit-Down (20 min) โ†’ Introduce Greenwashing + pick a brand claim to investigate
๐ŸŽฎ How to Apply the Activity โ€” Teacher Guide (3-Lesson Mini-Module)
1
Lesson 1 โ€” Warm-up (20 min): Open the Stand-Up/Sit-Down tab. Display greenwashing statements one at a time. Students physically stand for facts, sit for opinions, and raise hands for greenwashing claims. Introduces the concept before any research. Then students pick a brand's environmental claim to investigate over the following week.
2
Individual Research (1 week): Students use the Greenwashing Checklist tab to audit their chosen brand claim against 10 investigative questions. They use AI tools and internet sources to verify claims. The verdict score (0โ€“10) guides how strongly they will argue the case in Lesson 2.
3
Blurb Preparation: In the Blurb tab, students prepare and time a 3-minute video-recorded presentation assessing their brand's environmental stance. Use the live timer and checklist. Video is uploaded to the school communication platform before Lesson 2.
4
Lesson 2 โ€” Six Thinking Hats (30 min): In the Six Hats tab, assign each student a hat. Each student watches 3 peer blurbs (one from each cluster) and prepares questions using their hat's perspective. Then, in 3 rounds of 5โ€“7 min, they share views with the presenters.
5
"What If?" AI Prompts: In the What If? tab, presenters complete the statement "What if this brand's greenwashing continuedโ€ฆ?" using the prompt builder. Groups use AI to generate alternate outcomes and compare with the presenter's claims. Develops hypothetical reasoning at B1+.
6
Lesson 3 โ€” Brand Comment (15 min): In the Write to Brand tab, students draft a post or comment to the brand using the scaffold builder. Use formal but accessible B1+ register. Post to the brand's actual social media page as a class action (optional but powerful).
7
Reflection (15 min): In the Reflect tab, cluster groups share what new things they learnt about greenwashing and responsible consumption. What are the most logical, bias-free outcomes? Optional: invite a subject teacher (Biology, Economics) to give observations.
โฑ 3-lesson mini-module over one week. Vilnius University ยท Lithuania ยท B1 Level Activity 5. Extends Act1's social media influencer work into corporate environmental claims. Language focus: modal verbs for hedging (might / could / appear to / seem to / may), First Conditional (If companies mislead consumers, trust will erode), passive voice (claims are made / evidence is not provided), fact vs opinion distinctions. Core methodology: Six Thinking Hats (de Bono) + AI-enhanced hypothetical reasoning + inquiry-based learning. Assessment: blurb composition (structure, Checklist coverage, question-answer quality), creativity of video. CLIL links: Biology (ecosystems), Economics (markets), Media Studies (persuasion).

๐Ÿ’ฌ Post-Activity Discussion
๐Ÿค”
"How easy was it to tell fact from opinion?"
B1+: "It might seem straightforward, but many greenwashing claims appear to be facts because they use specific numbers or scientific-sounding language." Key insight: even facts can be selectively chosen to mislead.
๐ŸŽฏ
"What makes a greenwashing claim different from a lie?"
B1+: "A greenwashing claim may be technically true but could be deliberately misleading. If a company highlights one eco-friendly fact and hides ten harmful ones, that might be considered greenwashing even though the claim was not technically false."
๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿซ Teacher
After the Stand-Up/Sit-Down, introduce today's brands list. Each student (or pair) picks ONE brand's environmental claim to investigate over the following week. Collect their choices and group them into 3 "claim clusters" for Lesson 2. Provide the Greenwashing Checklist tab as homework.
๐Ÿ” Greenwashing Checklist โ€” Investigate Your Brand Claim (1 Week)
Method: Inquiry-based ยท AI-enhancedB1+: Evaluate evidence ยท Detect bias ยท Hedging language

Choose a brand's environmental claim (e.g. "100% sustainable" / "carbon neutral" / "eco-friendly packaging"). Use this checklist to investigate it. Rate each question: Verified / Misleading / Unclear.

๐Ÿ” GREENWASHING INVESTIGATION CHECKLIST

Verified claims ยท the lower the score, the more likely it is greenwashing
๐Ÿค– AI Research Prompts โ€” Verify the Claims!
๐Ÿ’ฌ "Is [Brand X]'s claim of being 'carbon neutral' independently verified? Who certified it?"
๐Ÿ’ฌ "What percentage of [Brand X]'s business is eco-friendly vs. their overall environmental impact?"
๐Ÿ’ฌ "Has [Brand X] faced any greenwashing accusations or lawsuits? Summarise the evidence."
๐Ÿ’ฌ "What does '100% recyclable packaging' actually mean in practice? Are consumers able to recycle it?"
๐Ÿ’ฌ "Find independent studies or NGO reports about [Brand X]'s environmental record."

๐ŸŸก
Round 2 โ€” Same hats, new cluster. Share with Cluster B presenters. Compare: is the greenwashing pattern similar across different brands and sectors?
๐ŸŸข
Round 3 โ€” Share with Cluster C presenters. Final synthesis: which cluster's brands were most/least transparent? What patterns have we identified?
๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿซ Teacher
Organise 3 rounds (5โ€“7 min each). Hat-wearers rotate between clusters. Monitor for use of hedging language (might / could / appear to) and fact-vs-opinion distinctions. Optional: invite a Biology or Economics teacher to the White Hat or Red Hat role. Informal assessment: quality of questions, use of checklist evidence.
๐Ÿค– "What If?" Hypothetical Reasoning โ€” AI-Enhanced (Lesson 2)
Method: Inquiry-based ยท AI-enhanced hypothetical reasoningB1+: First Conditional ยท Speculation

๐Ÿค– AI Prompts for "What If?" Reasoning
๐Ÿ’ฌ "What if [Brand X]'s greenwashing were exposed by a major investigative journalist? Write three likely outcomes."
๐Ÿ’ฌ "What if consumers stopped buying from brands with unverified eco-claims? How would markets change?"
๐Ÿ’ฌ "What if greenwashing were made illegal worldwide? What are the pros and cons?"
๐Ÿ’ฌ "What if governments required independent verification for all environmental claims? Model the effects."
๐Ÿ“ Language for "What If?" โ€” B1+ Conditional & Speculative Language
First Conditional (Real)
If companies continue to greenwash, consumer trust will fall.
If regulators act, brands will have to change.
Second Conditional (Unreal)
If all brands were honest, consumers would make better choices.
If greenwashing were illegal, markets would be fairer.
Speculation
This might lead toโ€ฆ / could result inโ€ฆ
It is likely thatโ€ฆ / unlikely thatโ€ฆ
The most probable outcome would beโ€ฆ
Conversational Markers

๐Ÿ’ฌ Before You Post โ€” B1+ Writing Checklist
✅ Is your tone respectful even though you are challenging their claim?
✅ Have you used hedging language? (appears to / might be / seems that)
✅ Have you cited specific evidence from your investigation?
✅ Have you asked a clear, specific question that requires a factual answer?
✅ Does your closing statement express a clear expectation from the brand?
๐Ÿ’ก Reflection โ€” What Did We Learn? (Lesson 3, 15 min)
Method: Critical reflection ยท Analytical thinkingB1+: Bias-free reasoning ยท Logical outcomes

In cluster groups, share what new things you learnt about greenwashing, responsible consumption, and digital footprint. What are the most logical, bias-free outcomes of widespread greenwashing? Click cards for model answers!

๐Ÿ”
"What is the most surprising greenwashing technique you discovered?"
B1+: "I was surprised to learn that companies might use vague language like 'eco-friendly' without any legal obligation to prove it. In other words, a product could be labelled 'green' even if only 5% of its production process is sustainable. After all, without independent certification, the claim cannot be verified."
๐Ÿค–
"How reliable was AI in verifying greenwashing claims?"
B1+: "AI appeared to provide useful summaries, but the information may not be fully up to date. That being said, using AI to generate initial research questions was valuable โ€” if you ask me, AI is most useful when you then cross-check with independent sources like NGO reports."
โš–๏ธ
"What are the most logical, bias-free outcomes if greenwashing continues?"
B1+: "If greenwashing continues unchecked, consumer trust in environmental claims will erode significantly. This could paradoxically harm genuinely sustainable brands. Come to think of it, the most logical outcome would be stricter independent certification requirements backed by legal penalties."
๐ŸŒ
"Did this activity change how you will shop or consume?"
B1+: "As a matter of fact, I now look for specific certifications (not just vague claims) before I buy. In other words, I have shifted from passive to active consumer. By the way, I also realise that my digital footprint โ€” the data trail I leave searching and sharing โ€” might itself influence what ads I see."
โœ๏ธ Homework & Follow-Up
📝Write a post or comment to your brand's social media page using the comment you built. Share the class observations about the products or services they advertise.
🔍Find ONE brand in your country that uses greenwashing AND one that is genuinely transparent. Compare them using at least 3 comparative or superlative sentences.
🌐Optional (Virtual Exchange): Share your blurb and findings with a partner class in another EcoLingua country. Are the same brands greenwashing in Turkey, Italy, and Spain?
