On June 18, 2025, the EcoLingua project team hosted a full-day workshop titled “Sustainability in ELT – Yabancı Dil Eğitiminde Sürdürülebilirlik” at the Nihat Zeybekci Congress and Culture Center in Denizli. Organized and facilitated by Asst. Prof. Mehmet Saraç and Asst. Prof. Serhat Güzel, the event brought together a dynamic group of in-service English teachers who share an interest in connecting language teaching with ecological awareness.
The day opened with a warm welcome and an introduction to the goals of the EcoLingua project. Participants were introduced to the core themes of the workshop: sustainability, eco-pedagogy, and the integration of digital tools and gamification in ELT. Through interactive presentations and group discussions, teachers explored how these elements can work together to create more environmentally conscious learning environments.
One of the highlights of the workshop was the coursebook review activity, where teachers critically analyzed the ecological content in English language materials using a customized SDG and eco-pedagogy checklist. This was followed by collaborative lesson planning sessions, where participants designed eco-oriented lessons tailored to their own teaching contexts. Working in themed groups—each named after an ecological concept—they shared ideas and reflected on how to apply sustainability principles in practical and creative ways.
In the afternoon, the energy remained high with a Quizizz game designed to both assess and reinforce workshop content in a gamified format. Participants earned tokens based on their engagement, which they later used in a symbolic eco-store activity. This playful but meaningful approach helped demonstrate how gamification can support both motivation and ecological literacy in the classroom.
Throughout the day, the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of Quality Education served as a guiding principle—emphasizing the importance of inclusive, equitable, and forward-looking education that empowers both learners and educators to act for sustainability.
The workshop concluded with a reflection session, where participants expressed their appreciation for the hands-on nature of the event and shared their commitment to implementing new ideas in their classrooms. The EcoLingua team is proud to have facilitated such a lively exchange of ideas and looks forward to organizing similar events in the future.
